The Pico do Papagaio trail is the most sought-after in all of Ilha Grande and Costa Verde, through dense forest with steep terrain and limited sky visibility. The path varies with rocky sections and fallen trees.
Pico do Papagaio is the second highest peak on Ilha Grande at 982 meters above sea level, just below Pico da Pedra d´Água at 1.035 meters. From the summit, you can see much of Ilha Grande's coast and the mainland. Depending on visibility, you may see the full expanse of Restinga da Marambaia, Pedra da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro, Dedo de Deus in Serra dos Órgãos, and Pico do Frade in Serra da Bocaina.
The trail is demanding, with 6 kilometers of constant uphill climbing. The descent on the return journey is equally exhausting.
A local guide is essential to ensure everything goes smoothly. Countless people have gotten lost for days and required rescue by the Fire Department.
