THE PLACE

Located in Ilha Grande, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Lopes Mendes Beach is one of the most famous and sought-after beaches in Brazil. With its 3 kilometers of white sand and crystal-clear water, the beach is a true paradise for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.

History

  • Lopes Mendes Beach was named in honor of Father Lopes Mendes, who was one of the first to arrive on the island in the 1920s.
  • The beach began to be discovered by tourists in the 60s and 70s, but it is still considered a preserved place with minimal infrastructure.
  • Originally, the beach was used as a timber export port, which led to deforestation of much of the island.
  • Fortunately, in 1967 the island was declared a national park and wood extraction was prohibited in the area, allowing the tropical rainforest to grow again.
  • Over time, the beach became a popular spot for surfers due to its impressive waves.
  • It is also a common place for day trips, as it is located on an island that can be accessed by boat from the coast.
